If you can do what you do best and be happy, you are further along in life than most people.Leonardo DiCaprio
Conversant in both German and Italian, Leonardo was born in Los Angeles, California on November 11, 1974. Leonardo DiCaprio’s first love is his mother, Irmelin, who single-handedly raised him and supported his passions throughoout his life. His mom is of German and Russian descent while his father, George DiCaprio, is of German and Italian descent, but his parents separated when he was just a year old. Irmelin felt Leo’s first kick in her womb, while she was looking at Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting, hence he was named Leonardo.
Leonardo entertained his friends and classmates in school by uncannily copying actions from people but he didn’t know that he can make a career out of it until he started auditioning. He left school while he was in third year high school however eventually achieved his GED (General Equivalency Diploma) to pursue acting. He first appeared in TV commercials and onto the big screen. All he then wanted was to make money to fund his college as he dreamed of becoming a Marine Biologist but after many years of pursuing his passions, he became an Oscar-winning actor on film and United Nations’ Messenger of Peace for his works in raising environmental issues, especially on global warming, to the people.
His fascination in the world that he lives in and the need to protect it from the destruction have always been his parallel passion. Hence, following the success of Titanic in 1997, Leonardo established in 1998 the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation to which was his platform to influence people or his fans to be aware about global warming and finding ways stop the dwindling and depleting natural resources through renewable energy. He has donated a great portion of his money to this cause. His first project was the production of the documentary, The 11th Hour (raised $40 Million), which tackles several ways on how we can save our planet and the humanity. He attended the World Economic Forum in Switzerland to receive the prestigious Crystal Award in 2015 and during 2016 climate negotiations in Paris, Leo gave a speech to leaders from around the world.
Researching about Leonardo’s life and achievements, led me to one realization- he knows his purpose. I think (by watching his interviews) that he realized how powerful his role is as an actor, which is to lead people to the great lessons everyone could learn from the movies he is part of or the characters he portrayed. He rejected various acting offers as he couldn’t get that connection with the material or the actor he was going to portray. He didn’t mind not winning acting awards, not even discouraged, because his eyes were fixed on his bigger passion- to fund his foundation and again lead people to things that most matter. He is a true messenger of peace.
As leaders and human beings, what have we led our people to see and realize to galvanize action?
